In a bid to whittle the powers of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the federal government will grant certificate of registration to the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA), a rival association to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
After the approval, CONUA will operate in parallel with ASUU and break the monopoly of academic unionism in the ivory towers.
CONUA had in 2018 applied for registration as a trade union at the Ministry of Labour and Employment while the Minister, Dr. Chris Ngige, in 2020 set up a ministerial committee to look into the application.
DAILY COURIER gathered that the new congress already has branches in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State; University of Benin; Federal University, Lokoja; Federal University, Oye Ekiti; Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, and University of Jos, among others.
At press time, a CONUA delegation was being expected at the headquarters of the Ministry of Labour and Employment in Abuja for a courtesy call, where the group’s certificate of registration will be presented.
