Daily Courier – The national working committee of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are divided over the announcement of the senate president Ahmed Lawan as consensus presidential candidate of the party.

This was disclosed to journalists today by the national organising secretary of the party, Amb. Suleiman Muhammad Argungu in company of majority of the NWC members at the national secretariat today.

Argungu maintained that the national chairman told them about the choice of the senate president as the consensus candidate without consulting with the NWC.

“Distinguish members of the press, as you can see all of us are coming from the NWC meeting.

“That we’re fully briefed by our national chairman, distinguished Senator Abdullahi Adamu and he did briefed us that the Senate President, Lawan is the consensus candidate for the APC national convention and that’s just for the information he gave us.

“But it’s not an issue that has been discussed on the floor of the NWC and we have just, and just recently about two days ago, the northern Governors meeting had a meeting that the leadership of this country, under the leadership under the All Progressive Congress should go to the north” Argungu said.

He added: “You see its just an information he gave us, and its not an issue that have to be deliberated on the floor of the NWC. It is an information and all of us are entitled to our opinion, we are all democrat and we can all exercise whatever.

“This decision was never taken by the NWC, but an information given to the NWC. It has never been deliberated.”

He reiterated that the national working committee of the party agrees with the position of the Northern governors that power should be zoned to the South.

“So we as members of the NWC we are also with the governors on what they have said and some minutes ago the governors on the North have gone to the presidency and have just briefed the president that they are still on what they said with regards to the powership to the south” he added.

Daily Courier recalled that Adamu made the announcement at the meeting of National Working Committee (NWC) on Monday in Abuja.

Other aspirants including Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Dr. Kayode Fayemi and David Umahi, among others will however be allowed to contest the primary at the convention holding tomorrow at the Eagle Square, Abuja.

The NWC members insisted other aspirants must be given a level playing ground to compete.

Adamu’s adoption of Lawan as consensus candidate is against the position of 11 APC northern Governors, who endorsed that power must shift to the South after President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure.

The national chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu however did not brief the press. He drove out of the Buhari house, national headquarters after dropping the news of his preferred candidate.

Other NWC members present at the press briefing include: Chief Victor Gaidom, vice chairman (South South); Chief Isaac Kekemeke, vice chairman (South West); Nze Chidi Duru, the assistant national organising secretary among others.
